Source of the incense formula
Han Weigong refers to Han Qi (1008–1075), who, alongside the renowned statesman Fan Zhongyan, bravely defended against the Western Xia, earning them the historical epithet “Han and Fan.” In the third year of the Jiayou era of Emperor Renzong of the Song Dynasty (1058), he was enfeoffed as the Duke of Wei, from which his title “Han Weigong” derives. This incense is said to have been cherished by him, hence its alternative name, “Weigong Incense.” One tale about Han Weigong’s rich plum‑scented fragrance dates back to the second year of the Chongning era under Emperor Huizong (103). The poet Huang Tingjian, while in exile in Yizhou, Guangxi, passed through Tanzhou (modern-day Changsha) and, together with the monk‑poet Huihong, embarked on a boat at Bixiang Gate. That night, seated aboard, they engaged in lively conversation; just then, Hua Guang Zhongren of Hua Guang Temple on Mount Heng sent over a painting of ink plums. Under the lamplight, after admiring the work, Huihong burned this incense to honor his friend, explaining that Su Dongpo had obtained it from Han Qi’s residence. Chenyu Incense is crafted according to an ancient formula, blending time‑honored intangible cultural heritage techniques of medicinal incense, and tailored to suit contemporary human physiques.
