Origins of Intangible Cultural Heritage
“Chenyu Xiang” is a time-honored brand passed down through the century-old establishment “Boshantang,” whose name was founded by Lin Zhangshui in the second year of the Xuantong era of the Qing Dynasty (1910). At the age of thirteen, Lin Zhangshui joined his father in the medicinal‑herb trade; from an early age, he was deeply captivated by the art of incense, medicine, and healing. In 1910, he began crafting aromatic incenses and established an incense‑making workshop, christening it “Boshantang.” The second-generation heir, Lin Qingchi—Lin Zhangshui’s son—was a man of keen inquiry and a strong commitment to innovation. Drawing on the incense‑related classics collected by his forebears, he systematically organized, refined, and expanded upon them, reviving and developing numerous traditional incense formulas and producing an ever‑growing array of fragrances. Beyond securing a prominent place in the domestic market, his products have been exported far and wide to Southeast Asia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and other regions, earning a reputation that resonates both at home and abroad. Known for his generosity and compassion, Lin Qingchi paid frequent visits to Master Hongyi. In response, the master inscribed a couplet in praise of him, using his given name “Qingchi”: “A pool of cool, virtuous merit; the full moon of the Dharma realm.”

An enterprise dedicated to the传承 of intangible cultural heritage, it conveys the aesthetic of Chinese aromatic wellness to the world through its medicinal incense products.
Agarwood is the foremost of all fragrances, prized for its ability to sink in water.
Agarwood is no ordinary wood; it is the result of resin secreted by trees of the Thymelaeaceae family after they sustain injury, which over decades—or even centuries—hardens into a solidified aromatic mass. High‑quality agarwood is exceptionally dense, sinking instantly in water, hence its name. Its fragrance is profound, serene, and lingering, while its medicinal properties are gentle and calming, making it prized for its aesthetic appeal, health‑promoting benefits, and collectible value—earning it an enduring place as the foremost among all fragrances.

Traditional incense culture emphasizes “nurturing the body and mind through fragrance,” going beyond the mere pursuit of aroma. In spring, burning mugwort and patchouli helps dispel dampness and purify the air; in summer, sandalwood and peppermint clear the heart and relieve the heat; and in autumn and winter, burning agarwood and benzoin gently warms, calms the spirit, and eases fatigue. With their mild medicinal properties, natural herbal incenses represent a simple, seasonal practice that harmonizes with the rhythms of nature and nurtures both body and mind.

Tips for Storing and Preserving Incense Sticks
Stick incense is sensitive to moisture, direct sunlight, and high temperatures. In humid conditions, it can absorb moisture, develop mold, burn unevenly, or lose its fragrance. For everyday storage, keep it sealed in a cool, dry, well‑ventilated, and dark place, away from damp areas such as the kitchen or bathroom. Long‑term storage does not require refrigeration; simply store it in an airtight container and let it rest. Proper preservation will allow its aroma to deepen and its quality to remain more stable.

The main raw materials of natural incense sticks
Pure, handcrafted incense sticks are crafted primarily from fragrant herbs, natural binding powders, and purified water, with no synthetic fragrances or combustion aids. The main ingredients typically include natural botanicals such as agarwood, sandalwood, mugwort, and Chinese juniper, while the auxiliary materials consist of all‑natural plant‑based binders that serve solely to hold the blend together and shape the stick. High‑quality incense boasts a pure composition, burns cleanly with minimal smoke, and emits a warm, natural aroma, offering both olfactory pleasure and wellness benefits.
