Source of the incense formula

The fragrance tradition is carried forward from the century-old brand “Boshantang” (the predecessor of Chenyu Xiang), which has maintained its own proprietary incense formula. In the 23rd year of the Guangxu era (1897), a plague broke out in Quanzhou and raged for several years, claiming thousands of lives. Lin Zhangshui, the founder of Boshantang, together with his father, was entrusted to transport medicinal herbs to Huaqiao Temple. Along the way, they witnessed the devastating toll the plague had taken on the city, an ordeal so harrowing that they joined forces with the temple’s community to prepare and distribute herbal remedies and provide medical care to the afflicted. At that time, they even burned incense made according to this very formula to disinfect the air and neutralize viruses and bacteria. Later, through the refinement of Zhuang Yanyu, the fourth-generation heir of Boshantang, this protective incense for warding off epidemics came into being.
